SAVE MITCHAM TENNIS CLUB
SAVE MITCHAM TENNIS CLUB 🎾
For more than 90 years, Mitcham Tennis Club has been part of our local community. Now, it’s at risk of being closed under Whitehorse Council’s draft Walker Park Redevelopment Master Plan.
The proposal recommends closing the club and repurposing the site.
We’re asking Council to reject this recommendation and work with the community to keep this important local facility alive.
Mitcham Tennis Club is a volunteer-run club with over 135 members and five well-maintained courts. It’s a place where people of all ages connect, stay active, and belong.
With fair funding and good planning, it can continue to serve future generations.
Mitcham TC, has been working continuously to protest the proposed removal of our Tennis Club at Walker Park.
Firstly, a huge thank you to all of you who have already sent letters to your local councillors, signed our petitions and spoken to neighbours, family and friends gathering
support to preserve our club.
Please see below news on what is happening and what you can do to help us convince the Whitehorse Council to keep us at Walker Park.
The Whitehorse Council has released the ‘Your Say’ community engagement website for the Walker Park Redevelopment Master plan Round 2. You can view all the information
at https://yoursay.whitehorse.vic.gov.au/walker-park-round-2
IMPORTANTLY, we ask that you Complete the Survey after reading the following facts and let them know that the Mitcham Tennis Club should not be closed at Walker Park.
Please let them know of the importance of our club to you and our local community.
The documents on the ‘Your Say’ website use incorrect and outdated data regarding the Mitcham Tennis Club.
Some facts about the statements in the draft report.
· We are not a club in decline – our membership is over 135 and growing.
· Council’s statement that ‘most usage is now coming from coaching and other clubs rather than active members is incorrect.
· Membership is only one measure of the health of a club. Our court usage is high (not low) – members bring non-member friends to play and our courts are in
regular demand from non-members for casual play.
· The loss of 5 courts would have a huge negative impact on the future of tennis in Whitehorse especially given the projected population growth.
Please encourage your family, friends, neighbours, favourite barista/hairdresser –
anyone supporting our club – to Complete the Survey (2 minutes) and spread the word.
The community engagement round 2 closes on March 28 so please complete the survey as soon as possible and make sure your response counts.
We have also set up an online petition at CHANGE.ORG – this is not for council but for social awareness
